In November 2022, the Danish Tax Agency opened access to the advance tax assessment for 2023. There have been several changes over the past few years that you should be aware of. This is primarily due to the changes that corona has brought about in the Danes' tax deductions. Corona has, among other things, affected all the 1.2 million Danes who normally drive to work.
A survey by TaxHelper found that as many as 50% of Danes did not update their mileage allowance on their tax return last year. And it's not just driving that you need to be aware of. For example, the craftsman deduction will be abolished from April 2022, leaving only services (cleaning, gardening, childcare, etc.).
It only takes 15 minutes to try TaxHelper and you'll get an average of DKK 2,704 extra back in tax
At the same time, you only pay if you get a tax saving.
1. Interest on home loans
In 2022, interest rates have changed a lot. If, like many other homeowners, you have converted your mortgage loan to a higher interest rate to reduce your outstanding debt, you must change this in your tax return. If you don't, you won't get the full deduction and will receive less per month than you are entitled to. These interest rates are particularly important to update, as a deduction that is DKK 6,000 too low can mean that you do not get DKK 2,000 extra for your finances right now.
2. Driving to work
As mentioned above, one third of Danes stick to at least one working day away from home even after corona. Therefore, it is important for the 1.2 million Danes with driving deductions to have their tax returns updated. For example, if you work from home 2 days a week and have 40 km to work, not getting it updated could result in a hit of almost 3,000 DKK.
3. Deductions for crafts will be abolished from April 1, 2022
You will no longer be able to deduct craft services such as energy savings after 1 April 2022. From then on, only services such as cleaning, gardening and childcare will be deductible on your tax return.
4. Rental of housing, car, etc.
If you're planning to rent out your home or car now that the world is opening up, it might be a good idea to include your expectations on your tax return. Then you can start the tax year ahead 1-0 and have a much better chance of avoiding tax leakage.
